Incontinence Benchmarking in Nursing & Care Homes

Download a pack to help benchmark your home's quality of bladder and bowel care

Best practice is best promoted when individual nursing homes are able to compare their systems and procedures to a set of recognised standards or benchmarks. The NHS advocates the establishment of comparison groups so that health care managers can be actively involved in comparing their own performance and that of their colleagues against best practice statements. This downloadable continence care self-assessment pack, uses the same process adapted to account for the fact that nursing homes tend to work much more in isolation and do not have significant contact with other homes in the local area, many of whom are their competitors.

The aim of the benchmarking exercise is to establish a resident/patient-focused approach with accountable health care practitioners delivering care, at a best practice level. By carrying out the exercise, you'll discover any deficiencies in your own approach to bladder and bowel care and get pointers as to how correct them.

The exercise asks you to assess your home's quality of incontinence care on scale from A to E against some standard statements. Other statements explaining what each of the levels on the scale should look like are also provided to help keep scoring consistent. For example, an E standard for Information for Residents/Patients/Carers would be: "Residents/patients/carers have no evidence based information about bowel and bladder care." while the A standard would say: "Free access to evidence-based information about bowel and bladder care that has been adapted to suit individual patients needs and/or those of their carers."

Alongside each standard statement, there is a column listing actions that could help improve your score against the standard. At the bottom of each page of the PDF you'll find information about how Gompels can help you deliver best practice; not just through supplying you with incontinence products, but also through some of our free resources that will help you manage your continence care needs and train your staff.

If you have any suggestions about how this pack can be improved or feel that it is inappropriate in any way we are always interested to hear from you. It has been developed in association with care and nursing home managers and health care professionals, but we recognise that there is always room for improvement.
