In order to promote best practice, it is important that individual nursing homes have the opportunity to compare their systems and procedures to a set of recognised standards or benchmarks. In the NHS, it is advocated that comparison groups are established so that health care managers can be actively involved in comparing their own performance and the performance of their colleagues against best practice statements. In this self assessment pack, the same process is used but it has been adapted to take account of the fact that nursing homes tend to work much more in isolation and do not have significant contact with other homes in the local area, many of whom are competitors.
